Michael Stephens, PhD, LPC Approach to Therapy

Michael practices Narrative Therapy/Counseling, a collaborative and non-pathologizing approach that views clients as the experts of their own lives.  Rooted in the work of Michael White and David Epston, Narrative Therapy sees problems as separate from people and recognizes that individuals possess a wide range of skills, values, commitments, and competencies that can support meaningful change.  In this framework, stories are understood as the patterns that link life events over time, and “problem-saturated” narratives can come to dominate how people perceive themselves and their possibilities.  Key Narrative practices include externalizing conversations (separating people from their problems), re-authoring conversations (exploring alternative storylines), and listening for the untold or subordinated narratives that reveal clients’ values, hopes, and strengths.

To deepen his understanding and skill with these ideas, Michael completed the Level One and Two intensives at the Dulwich Centre in Adelaide, Australia, an internationally recognized hub for Narrative Therapy training where faculty maintain active practice and dialogue with the work Michael White helped establish. These immersive trainings provided hands-on experience with core Narrative practices such as externalizing, re-authoring, outsider-witness practices, and other narrative maps designed to support change in respectful, contextually grounded ways.

Michael has adapted these Narrative principles into his own clinical style, integrating collaboration, relational context, and a person-centered focus that respects each client’s unique life experiences. In his work, he supports clients in uncovering strengths, exploring perceived challenges, and co-creating meaningful steps toward change.  Michael worked to support his clients to aide them in living lives that feel authentic, empowered, and aligned with their values.

While past life events cannot be changed, Michael believes that individuals can learn from their experiences, gain insight, and develop strategies that allow them to live more freely. Through this process, clients are supported in creating space for growth, embracing their values, and practicing a life that feels authentic and self-directed.
