Michael Stephens, PhD, LPC

     Michael Stephens is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Pennsylvania.  He has a Master’s Degree in Human Development Counseling, focusing on Family, Marriage, and Couples Counseling from the University of Illinois-Springfield.  He also has a doctorate degree in Counselor Education and Supervision from Duquesne University.

     Michael works from a Narrative Therapy approach to counseling which is a helpful tool to assist clients to look at their lives critically and holistically, while processing the changes they would like to see in their lives and relationships.  Michael’s clinical goal is to collaboratively unearth the themes of strengths and problems, the strategies they have attempted to work through their problems, strengthen self-identity and awareness, and explore the changes clients want in their lives by breaking changes into manageable tasks. He also works systemically with clients spouses and family member to build more supportive and connected relationships.

     Michael's experience includes working with individuals with a wide array of diagnoses and struggles.  Additionally, he has a distinct interest and specialized experience in working with Families and Couples in therapy.  Michael has worked in a variety of settings in Pennsylvania and Illinois including outpatient counseling clinics, school-based therapy on-site in various school districts, in-home Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), as well conducting in-home Family Based Therapy.  He also has specializations in working with heterosexual and same-sex couples, individuals struggling with gender identity or gender dysphoria, mediating and resolving family conflict, autism spectrum disorders, and borderline personality disorders.​

     Although it is impossible to change the outcomes of troubling life events that have occurred in the past, Michael believes we as as people can learn from these experiences and identify strategies to free ourselves and practice our lives more free from them.
